Sea turtles on Alagadi beach

Sea turtles have lived on earth for over 200 million years. As of today, only 7 species of these amazing animals have survived in the world.
Three species of sea turtles are found in the Mediterranean Sea. Two of them can be seen on the coast of Northern Cyprus. These are the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) and the green turtle (Chelonia mudas).

Both species nest and lay their eggs on the beaches of the island. One of the most famous sea turtle nesting sites in Northern Cyprus is Alagadi Beach. It is located about 15 kilometers east of Kyrenia. You can only get there by car.

Alagadi beach, enclosed by weathered rocks, fascinates travelers with its fantastic landscapes.

Cliffs protruding into the sea divide it into several bays. The beach line with its soft golden sand is wide, the bottom is sandy, with no stones. The entrance to the water is gentle with extensive shallow water.

The beach is called "turtle" because every year from June to October, sea turtles come here to lay their eggs in the soft sand and leave their offspring.

This is one of the few places in Cyprus where you can see such incredible sea creatures.

Hatchlings usually wait until night to emerge from the nest. Therefore, from 20:00 to 08:00, visitors are asked to leave the beach. Around each nest found, beach volunteers set up a fence to mark and secure the site.

There is no infrastructure on the beach. It is better to bring water, towels, sun umbrellas and other accessories with you.
